AIMS & OBJECTIVES

THE CAUCUS FOR PRODUCERS, WRITERS & DIRECTORS has been organized for the purpose of enabling the creative community to assume a more direct responsibility for the content of television and new media programming and to protect its integrity of the creative process. We stand for the following:
  1. THE CAUCUS believes networks, local stations, cable and pay-TV services, advertisers, production companies, new media and the creative community must recognize their primary responsibility to the viewing public and to strive to elevate program quality to better serve that public.
  2. THE CAUCUS stands for freedom of expression for all forms of programming and is, therefore, opposed to unreasonable and unwarranted intrusion into content by government or by special interest groups.
  3. THE CAUCUS is concerned about the growing trend toward corporate consolidation that affects the types of programming available to the American public and severely restricts the creative process and threatens the independent production community.
  4. THE CAUCUS believes that employment of all creative and production personnel should be delegated by the program producer and/or supplier. Mandated approvals of a program's creative elements by networks, cable companies or program distributors should only be exercised in consultation with the program producer/supplier.
  5. THE CAUCUS advocates reasonably sufficient lead time between the ordering of a program and its initial air date so that program creators and producers may apply their optimum talents to the execution and delivery of high quality programming in the most cost effective manner possible.
  6. THE CAUCUS believes that the television industry should adopt minimum, uniform accounting definitions and practices so that creative artists with contractual financial positions will have a fair and reasonable expectation of sharing in program proceeds.
  7. THE CAUCUS believes that, network programming should award more original programs in every time period throughout a fifty-two week period to the independent producers for the benefit of the creative community as well as for the viewing public.
  8. THE CAUCUS is concerned with the proliferation of seamless scheduling that eliminates a proper recognition of credits is unfair to the creative community.
  9. THE CAUCUS believes that no Guild should trespass in the internal affairs of any other Guild.
  10. THE CAUCUS strongly opposes any industry practices which, directly or indirectly, discriminate against individuals on the basis of, including but not limited to gender, race, sexual orientation, political ideology, religion, physical disability or age.
  11. THE CAUCUS, although condemning censorship, believes that all parties involved in shaping program content should be constantly aware of the uniquely pervasive nature of the television medium and should act responsibly by not giving the appearance of condoning substance abuse, racism, sexism, ageism, gratuitous violence, offensively inappropriate language, sexual exploitation or any other inherently anti-social behavior.
  12. THE CAUCUS is dedicated to the education and mentoring of new producers, writers and directors. The Caucus Foundation gives completion grants to a diverse group of worthy students based on judging a rough cut of their thesis production. Two outstanding productions are chosen each year for the Gold Circle Awards. Caucus members are assigned to mentor each grant recipient. To further the career of students, the Caucus Foundation offers internships to a select group to work for host companies who offer their services.
  13. THE CAUCUS believes that the internet is key to the future of all communication and is spearheading a program to invite New Media producers, writers and directors to join and participate in The Caucus organization and its programs.
  14. THE CAUCUS believes in serving the Entertainment Community and accordingly plans each year a series of panels as an outreach to them. The subject matter reflects current and continuing creative technological social and governmental issues and activities. The Caucus Forum provides interactive communications with members and nonmembers who follow the postings on the site. MySpace and FaceBook are also internet venues utilized by The Caucus to communicate with the Entertainment Community.
  15. THE CAUCUS in its mission to improve the quality of television presents at its Annual Awards Dinner awards to encourage and acknowledge the creative, executive and technological community in their goal to serve the viewing audience.
