| WHAT IT IS: |
The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors is
the television industry's only coalition of the Creative talents that bear primary responsibility for the origination of television programs. |
|
MISSION: |
The basic intent of the Caucus is to assume "a more direct
responsibility to the American viewing public for television programming and related fields and to protect the creative freedom of the industry's creative talent. |
|
BACKGROUND: |
The Caucus was founded in 1974 in response to a strike by the Writers Guild that imposed certain sanctions on
"hyphenates" – writers who also produced and/or directed programs. Several hyphenate Caucus members sued to protect the rights and those of others.
The Supreme Court issued a verdict in the Caucus members' favor.
Following the victory, the Caucus decided to broaden its membership with the goal of creating a body that could influence the direction and quality of television programming in ways that were consistent with the medium's role as a public trust. |
| MEMBERSHIP: |
The Caucus is comprised of 140 men and women.
New Caucus members are nominated by existing members and voted on by the Membership Committee. The nomination is then passed to the Steering Committee, which makes a final decision. New members must have created or contributed to the creation of a substantial body of work marked by distinctive quality. |
| GOVERNANCE: |
The Caucus is managed by a Steering Committee of 14 regular
members and six officers serving two-year terms, and six Alternates who serve one-year terms. All are elected by the full membership. All significant
