Lionel Chetwynd and LeVar Burton

The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors in association with AFTRA, PGA, SAG and WGA will honor U.S.Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Producer, Writer, Director & Activist Lionel Chetwynd and Actor, Director & Humanitarian LeVar Burton with the Fourth Annual American Spirit Award on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at a dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Event Chair was Chuck Fries, assisted by Lee Miller, on behalf of Gary Grossman, Chair of the Caucus Government Affairs Committee.

Senator Dorgan was recognized for positions in both the US Senate and Commerce Committee as a committed ally recognizing the plight of Media Consolidation, Lionel Chetwynd was recognized for embodying the very best of the American spirit in film and TV and LeVar Burton was recognized for his quality of work and humanitarianism in giving back by encouraging reading in young children.

"Senator Dorgan's once said, not too long ago 'In a democracy, making sure that citizens are able to get news and information from a variety of independently owned sources is crucial'" Vin Di Bona, Co-Chair of The Caucus, said, adding, "Senator Dorgan is an unrelenting advocate for competitive and diverse media. He knows that all of us are better off if all of us have a chance to speak and be heard. And Senator Dorgan is very good at helping his colleagues see it the same way."

Dennis Doty, Chair of The Caucus, said of Lionel Chetwynd, "I have the pleasure of making the first presentation to an individual whose works over the years embody the very best of the American spirit in film and TV."

"After "Roots", he went on to honor Alex, Kunta Kinte, his heritage, by helping, by mentoring young people, by working on shows for PBS," quoted Bill Blinn, Co-Chair of The Caucus introducing LeVar Burton.

Introduced by Robb Weller, Co-Chair of the Government Affairs Committee of The Caucus, Alan Rosenberg, SAG President, stated, "By honoring LeVar Burton, Lionel Chetwynd, and Senator Dorgan tonight, we celebrate American pop culture, cinema, philanthropy, creativity, and advocacy -- all which are the foundation of our creative community."
