FAY KANIN
Fay Kanin, writer-producer for stage, screen and television was a
four-term President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, only one of two
women who ever occupied that position in its history. She is at present serving as
Treasurer of the Academy and as chair of the Foreign Film Executive Committee. A member of
the Board of Trustees of the American Film Institute, she co-chairs with Martin Scorsese
and John Ptak its Center for Film and Video Preservation. She also chairs the National
Film Preservation Board in Washington, mandated by Congress in 1989.
Her films have won awards in every field - an Academy Award nomination for
TEACHER'S PET which she co-wrote with her husband, Michael Kanin; Emmy, Peabody,
Christopher, Writers Guild awards for TELL ME WHERE IT HURTS, HUSTLING, FRIENDLY FIRE,
HEARTSOUNDS, on which she also served as co-producer. She also co-produced FUN AND GAMES
for ABC which received the National Commission of Working Women Broadcast Award. Her
Broadway play RASHONON, which she and her husband co-wrote, has been produced all over the
world and recently, a musical, GRIND, directed by Harold Prince, appeared on Broadway and
won a Tony nomination.
The Writers Guild of America, for which she served as president of the Screen
Branch, honored her with its prestigious Valentine Davies and Morgan Cox awards. She also
prizes her awards from the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters, The
American Women for International Understanding and the Crystal Award of Women in Film.
