Norman S. Powell has had a versatile and distinguished television and film career. Beginning as an Assistant Director after graduating from Cornell University, he quickly moved from Unit Production Manager to Production Executive, Producer, Director, Network Executive and Executive Producer.

As a veteran professional, Mr. Powell’s career has encompassed comedy series, drama series, movies for television, mini-series, feature films, long-form documentaries and documentary series. Highlighting his career as a producer/director in the television series format were the popular New Dick Van Dyke Show, Lazarus Man starring Robert Urich, Orleans, starring Larry Hagman, and The Lot, starring Holland Taylor. In addition, he produced fourteen episodes of the second season of the popular Fox series, "24" starring Kiefer Sutherland, and the pilot for The Unit, a CBS series starring Dennis Haysbert.

Powell produced many impressive movies for television including Convict Cowboy starring Jon Voight, Gunsmoke: One Man’s Justice starring James Arness, Gunsmoke: The Long Ride starring James Arness and Ali McGraw, and More Than Friends starring Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall. In addition, Mr. Powell produced the critically acclaimed twelve-hour mini-series Washington: Behind Closed Doors starring Jason Robards, Cliff Robertson and Robert Vaughn, as well as the stirring six-hour Black Fox mini series, starring Christopher Reeve.

Norman Powell spent twelve years as an executive with CBS Television, advancing to Senior Vice President of CBS Entertainment Productions, where he ran the division and supervised all development and production on movies-for-television and series, including the highly rated and acclaimed reality show - Rescue 911, Emmy winner Miracle Landing, starring Wayne Rogers, the two-hour pilot for Cagney and Lacey, starring Tyne Daly and Loretta Swit, the two-hour pilot for Wolf, starring Jack Scalia, the inspiring Unconquered starring Peter Coyote and Dermot Mulroney, The New Twilight Zone series, the light-hearted Quarterback Princess starring Helen Hunt and the moving Escape from Iran: The Canadian Caper starring Gordon Pinsent.

During his tenure at CBS, Mr. Powell supervised over eighty movies for television/mini-series and eleven series. Since leaving the network, he has produced over seventy hours of prime time programming.

As Senior VP of Production for MTM/The Family Channel, Mr. Powell supervised all production on The Pretender, Sparks, and Good News series as well as numerous movies for the Family Channel.

Mr. Powell executive-produced a half-hour documentary, Hollywood’s Best Kept Secrets for AMC, and executive-produced and directed a ninety minute documentary for PBS, American Valor, which takes a compelling look at American heroes who have earned the country’s highest military recognition, The Medal of Honor. He also executive-produced, (with partner Lionel Chetwynd), a two-hour documentary for PBS, Darkness at High Noon: The Carl Foreman Documents. This partnership also produced twelve hours of National Desk, an award winning documentary series for PBS. Currently, Mr. Powell is completing a feature documentary, Brothers At War for Metanoia Films.

Among the awards and recognition Mr. Powell has received he is especially proud of the Telly Award for "American Valor", the Emmy nomination as Producer of "24", The Norman Felton Producer of the Year Award (The Producers Guild), the Peoples Choice Award for Rescue 911, the Emmy award for Miracle Landing and the Emmy nomination as producer for Washington: Behind Closed Doors for Outstanding Limited Series, the Telly Awards for the documentaries Politics and Warriors and The War on Boys, the AMPIA Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Motion Picture Industry in Alberta, Canada, and the Distinguished Service Award from The Caucus for Television Producers, Writers and Directors.

Mr. Powell is a current member of the Directors Guild, The Writers Guild, The Caucus for Television Producers, Writers and Directors, (Steering Committee member, former Co-Chair and current Treasurer), and the Academy for Television Arts and Sciences.

A proud father of four children, he and his wife live in Los Angeles.
